Project Goals
Menouet
River Bridge Project
The
34,000 Cameroonian villagers of Foreke-Dschang, Fotetsa, Fossong-
Watchang, and Fongo Ndgeng rarely see benefits from their long days
spent toiling in their fields. They are farmers who live off of
produce sales at the local market. Though these farmers are
nearly next door to the nearest market, they have no way to cross the
Menouet River, and are therefore, forced to travel 17 km out of their
way to reach it. With the amount of money they spend on making
this trek, they end up earning as much or less than what it cost them
to produce in the first place.
Since 1986, the villagers have longed to build a bridge over the
Menouet River in order to more easily access the market.
According to statistics from the Department of Agriculture in Dschang
with the bridge in place and the decrease in distance necessary to
travel, the villages would see a profit of 26,500,000 FCFA per year, an
equivalent of around 56,000 USD.
The
villagers have contributed all they can to this project; but with their
economic disadvantage are unable to fund it entirely on their
own. Peace Corps Volunteers Lee Allen and Amber Lantz in
collaboration with Breaking Ground ask you to partner with these
Cameroonian villagers to see their dream realized. In donating to
the construction of this bridge you will help these villagers finally
reap the benefits from that which they sow.
